In additional EOS RP was introduced by Canon in February 2019. It belongs to the Mirrorless Cameras category.
Canon is well-known and shouldn’t require further introduction, please see our manufacturer’s page for more digital cameras by Canon.
The EOS RP has a Full frame CMOS sensor with size of 36 x 24 mm² (1.41″ x 0.94″).
Picture of EOS RP’s sensor compared to popular format.
The 1-Euro coin has a diameter of 23.25mm.
The EOS RP’s image sensor has an effective resolution of around 26 megapixel. The resolution is far above average and will easily be sufficient for years to come. Photos with this resolution can easily be printed in A2 size or larger, even if unwanted parts of the photo have to be cropped.
The EOS RP features a mechanism for automatic sensor cleaning.
|Sensor area||35.80 x 23.90mm²
(1.41″ x 0.94″)
|Resolution (physical)||27.10 megapixel|
|Resolution (effective)||26.20 megapixel|
|Pixel size||33.20 µm²|
|Mount||Canon R Mount|
The EOS RP uses an electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 2.36 megapixel, an excellent value for a viewfinder like this which makes the camera a joy to use.
The magnifcation is c. 0.70x, an above average value for an electronic viewfinder.
The EOS RP’s shutter speed varies from 1/4000s to 30s.
|Max. shutter speed||1/4000s|
|Min. shutter speed||30s|
The EOS RP’s sensitivity is from 100 ISO and 40000 ISO.
Also, Canon’s sensitivity can be boosted to 102400. Therefore, ISO boosting will lead to growth noise.
|Min. sensitivity||100 ISO|
|Max. sensitivity||40000 ISO|
The EOS RP supports all general exposure modes.
The Canon allows spot exposure for the difficult occasion.
|Auto Focus Properties|
The EOS RP’s auto focus processor uses 4779 AF points (or sensors). A basic rule of thumb says that the more AF points you have, the better. More AF points mean a better chance to have a point at the location of interest in a scene, a big plus in challenging situations (e.g. when panning the camera).
Manual focus is also possible with the Canon, a plus in tricky situations or for some creative freedom.
|Type||Phase Detection, Contrast Detection|
The EOS RP doesn’t feature a built-in flash. That is not unsusual in this camera category.
A flash or a trigger for remote flashes can be attached to the Canon’s hotshoe.
The EOS RP display has a diagonal of 76.00mm (3.0 inches.) and a resolution 1.04 megapixel.
The camera display is intended for selfies or other occasion.
EOS RP video supported the resolution with 3840 x 2160 pixel.
Also the camera is equipped with an external microphone.
Canon EOS RP Video parameters:
|Max. resolution||3840 x 2160 pixel|
|…with frame rates||24 frames/second|
|Connectivity & Wireless Specs|
The EOS RP has Wi-fi connection. You can transfer photos to a mobile or laptop using wi-fi.
For photo transferring users may use Bluetooth option.
Eventually, if the wifi connection is disabled the wired connection may be used.
Connect the Canon to a monitor or TV set over HDMI.
The Canon connects to your PC over USB 2.0. Given the high resolution that the camera supports, USB 3.0 would have been a nice addition.
The camera supports SD HC and SD XC cards.
Memory cards characteristics:
The Canon EOS RP works with a LP-E17 LiIon battery. The battery lifetime is an average 250 shots. That’s on the lower side of things for a full day, consider a spare battery for the EOS RP.
The battery can be charged over USB while in camera. Very useful, especially on vacation when most people bring a USB charger for their smartphone anyway.
The EOS RP’s battery battery parameters:
|Battery life||250 photos|
The Canon EOS RP’s size is 132.5 x 85 x 70mm³. (5.2″ x 3.3″ x 2.8″). That dimensions are without lens. The weight of camera is 5.2″ x 3.3″ x 2.8″ grams (485 oz.) without lens weight.
